Feb 18, 2012 - Gyrocopters often have a small belt going to the main rotor just to get it started spinning.... after it starts spinning though it's allowed to freewheel on it's own. Giving the main rotor a pre-spin just helps it get going faster so you can take-off in a shorter distance.
